VIDEO: Pagosa Springs Compost Project

Local activists Cedar McGrath and Judy James started this educational recycling project in 2014 in cooperation with the Colorado State University Extension Center in Archuleta County and two local Pagosa Springs restaurants: Pagosa Baking Company and Riff Raff Brewing.

McGrath and James constructed their composing bins from recycled shipping pallets, and are blending the food scraps and coffee grounds from the two local restaurants with straw and sawdust to produce a useful composted product, with each bin taking about a month to reach its final stage.

McGrath and James hope to encourage other local gardeners to “adopt a restaurant” and help recycle food waste into soil amendments, rather than carrying the waste to the local Archuleta County landfill.
